Interview : Amanda Merten

Amanda is a baby beast! She is one of the original [and enduring!] BB muses and we <3 every-little-thing about this bad ass, talented, Vegas-born beauty…

blaaahg:

Making a name for herself with her contribution to Anne Taylors’ The Smartest Thing She Ever Said, and her range of portraiture, she’s on the up and up of the competetive world of photography. We’ve known Amanda for some time now, from bro-tastic cookouts, to random run-ins along the East Coast, so we thought we would catch up with the trans-coastal talent to chat a bit about everything, from growing up in Las Vegas, her biggest creative influences, and life after college. All she could do was wait for the doctor’s diagnosis. They were accumulating so quickly though, these problems. She had better start writing them down in order of appearance. She didn’t want to forget about any, and there must be some casual relation between them. It would benefit her to be diligent here.

So there was that first morning, when she couldn’t feel his back, when he just blended into the world; then all the food she couldn’t taste; then the loose teeth and that day when her hair grew uncontrollably, like crabgrass desperately trying to overtake a manicured lawn. She examined the end of her ponytail: shoulder-length. Fine. That business had really better not start up again. Then there was the weird, wet foot. Who could forget that foot? As for what was still wrong… well, her breath had stayed noxious – bleachy and plastic-tasting. And that radiant heat hadn’t gone away. She was still hot to her own touch.

Noticed

She hadn’t even noticed that something was amiss at first. He was the one who was concerned. It was early in the morning when she first told him how soft his skin was, that she couldn’t even tell if she was touching him or not. It wasn’t even 7am yet, but he thought to ask questions. Did she mean that literally? Could she really not feel him? What was she talking about? Was she making up dumb song lyrics again?
